WER 2026 – RD 7: Bay Breakers v Boston Banshees

The Bay Breakers host the Boston Banshees in the second ‘Battle of the B’s’ of the 2026 WER season, this time at Heart Health Stadium in Sacramento, CA!

These teams last met at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium in Quincy, MA back in Round 5.

WER 2026 – RD 4: Bay Breakers v Chicago Tempest

The Bay Breakers host the travelling Chicago Tempest at Heart Health Park in Sacramento during Round 4 of the 2026 WER season!

The Bay Breakers come into this game with a 2-0 all time record against the Tempest, with the most recent meeting coming in Round 12 of the 2025 season when they recorded a 45-21 victory, also at home albeit down in Lodi, CA.

The Tempest’s woes against the Breakers would continue in their third ever meeting. The on-form Breakers opened the scoring in the first minute through Taina Tukuafu and never looked back. They were 21-0 up by the 10 minute mark and the reeling Tempest did rally and open their account after 15 minutes through fly-half Chloe Runge, starting a small alternation of rapid scoring, with the Breakers securing the try BP a few minutes later before Kaylee Westmoreland scored a second for Chicago in the 23rd minute. At this point, the Breakers pulled away with another 3 tries before the half time break, taking a  47-12 lead into the sheds.

The second half started calmer, with the Tempest able to hold off the Breakers for almost the first 20 minutes, but unable to add any score of their own. The floodgates eventually opened once again though, with another 3 scores for the Breakers in the 10 minutes from 58 to 68, before Katie Lohaus and the Tempest were able to get the final score of the day, but it was far too late. The league-leading Breakers take a huge 66-17 victory and remain at the top of the standings. The Tempest were unable to salvage a point, but stay just ahead of the NY Exiles in 5th place.

2026 – RD 9: California Legion v Old Glory DC

The California Legion host Old Glory DC at Heart Health Park in Sacramento, CA during Round 9 of the 2026 MLR season. This game marks both the first Major League Rugby game played in Sacramento, and the second leg of the 2026 ‘Shield Showdown’ for a Sunday Night Rugby marquee matchup.

The Legion enter this game having given the undefeated Chicago Hounds their biggest test of the season in Round 7, but still fell to 3rd in the standings behind the Seattle Seawolves. A win here would even up their record at 4-4, and would almost guarantee them a spot in the postseason. Their rivals, Old Glory DC, currently occupy the final playoff spot only 3pts above the Free Jacks and Anthem. A win on the road in California would be enormous for their playoff push and put them into 3rd.

Although the Legion opened the scoring early through Corbin Smith, the first quarter of this game was a role reversal from what we’ve seen from these teams so far this season. The California Legion, usually dominant in possession, had to put in some long, strong defensive efforts to keep Old Glory DC (usually happy to defend) at bay. The Flags got on the board through John Rizzo about 10 minutes after Smith opened the scoring, but the momentum began to shift after the first hydration break. Legion captain Jason Damm crossed to restore the host’s 7pt lead, and a dagger on the stroke of half time from Tonga Kofe took the Legion’s lead to 21-5 at the break.

The Flags managed a second try from Bart Vermeulen in the 53rd minute, but not before Corbin Smith doubled up a few minutes earlier, and that would be the final score for Old Glory DC. Despite numerous entries into the Legion 22, the Flags could not execute in the red zone, with mistakes creeping in at critical times, giving the Legion easy outs. The Legion meanwhile, grew more clinical on attack as the game went, and scored another two tries within 2 minutes not long after the 2nd hydration break to blow the visitors away. This one finishes 42-10 to the California Legion, who jump back into 2nd place over the Seattle Seawolves. Old Glory DC fail to pick up any points, and drop to 5th after the Free Jacks’ victory over Anthem RC. DC are down but not out, and need to finish strong if they want to play rugby in mid-june.

WER 2026 – RD 1: Bay Breakers v Denver Onyx

The Bay Breakers host the Denver Onyx as both teams kick off their 2026 WER campaigns at Heart Health Stadium in Sacramento!

This game marks the first WER game held at Heart Health Stadium as the reigning champion Denver Onyx start their title defence campaign on the road. The Onyx recorded a near-flawless inaugural season with a 9-1 regular season record, surely looking to at least equal that in WER’s 2nd campaign. The Bay Breakers finished 3rd in 2025 with a 6-4 record just a single point behind the New York Exiles and a chance to fight for the Legacy Cup. After coming so close last season, the Breakers will look to improve on their 32pts from last year.

The Denver Onyx hold a 2-0 lead in the series between these two franchises, with the most recent meeting a 17-40 road victory for the Onyx. How will the Breakers fare this time around?

The answer, it turns out, is far better than last season. The defending champions stumble out of the starting blocks and fall 36-19 to the Bay Breakers on the road, with the hosts picking up a bonus point victory while failing to allow the Onyx to do the same. This is the first time the Breakers have defeated the Onyx, with Denver suffering just their 2nd loss ever to kick off the 2026 season.
