League: Major League Rugby

Founded in 2017 with it’s inaugural season played in 2018, Major League Rugby (MLR) is the highest level of professional rugby in North America.

2021 – RD 8: Rugby United New York v LA Giltinis

The LA Giltinis travel across the country to take on Rugby United New York at Cochrane Stadium in the 1st ever ‘Champagne Cup’, one of many intra-season trophies that are contested throughout a typical Major League Rugby Season.

It was a low scoring affair, with the NY defence holding LA to just 1 try and 16 points, as the men from the big apple inflicted LA’s first ever defeat in MLR, despite not scoring a single try!

6 successful penalties from NY fly-half Dan Hollinshead gave NY all 18 of their points, triumphing over the west coast outfit, 18-16. Hollinshead becomes just the 1nd MLR player ever to score 100% of his team’s points in a winning effort, following Sam Windsor who scored all 21 of Houston’s points in a 21-20 victory.

2021 – RD 8: Utah Warriors v Old Glory DC

Old Glory DC travel to Utah to face the Warriors at Zions Bank Stadium.

A closely-fought contest saw the lead flip back anf forth a number of times in the closing stages of the game, with the visitors maintaining a 27-33 lead when the clock went red. This was not how the game would finish however, as a 82nd minute try by Mika Kruse, followed by a 83rd minute conversion from Utah fly-half Hagen Schulte snatched victory for the Warriors in front of a delighted home crowd, with a final scoreline of 34-33 to the home side.

2021 – RD 8: Toronto Arrows v Rugby ATL

The Toronto Arrows are billed as the home team as they take on their 2021 ‘roommates’, Rugby ATL at Lupo Family Field.

The first 10 minutes of the game saw 3 tries scored. Two for the Arrows and one for ATL, who added another 2 tries towards the end of the half before adding another shortly after half-time to make the score 14-26 to the ‘away’ team…who were playing at their home arena.

Toronto battled back into the game with tries from Gaston Mieres in the 53rd minute, followed by another from Tomy de la Vega 10 minutes later. Only one of these was converted, but Tayler Adams added a penalty in the 75th minute to give the Arrows a 29-26 lead with a handful of time remaining. However, with the clock well into the red, a last-gasp attack from the RATLERS found a way through, with Ross Deacon dotting down in the 82nd minute to seal the win for Rugby ATL.
