2021 MLR Collegiate Draft

The 2021 Major League Rugby Collegiate Draft was the second draft in MLR history, and came with significant changes from the inaugural draft the year before.

Unlike in 2020, Canadian colleges & universities were now eligible for the draft and because of this, the Toronto Arrows took part after skipping the 2020 draft. The draft also expanded to 3 rounds with all 13 teams for the 2022 season taking part, for 39 draftees in total (up from 24 in 2020).

The Dallas Jackals, having deferred their entry into the league from 2021 to 2022, would select 1st in each round. The draft order from 2nd-13th was determined by the inverse of the 2021 standings, with the Houston SaberCats picking 2nd in each round as the last-placed team during the 2021 season, and the Championship-winning LA Giltinis picking 13th (last) in each round.

With their second 1st overall pick in as many years, the Dallas Jackals selected Eric Naposki as MLR’s second 1st overall picks, and would become the first 1st overall pick to play for the team that drafted them. Four of the 39 draftees were from newly-eligible Canadian colleges, 3 of these 4 draftees were selected by MLR’s only Canadian team, the Toronto Arrows.

The below tables show how many picks each MLR team had during the 2021 draft, and which Colleges had the most draftees selected:
