2021 – RD 14: Seattle Seawolves v Austin Gilgronis

The Seawolves host the AGs at Starfire Stadium.

Seattle winger Lauina Futi opened the scoring early with a try in the 3rd minute. This would be the first of a hattrick of tries that Futi would score in this game, the second hattrick in Seawolves history and the 13th in the history of MLR!

Futi’s hattrick wasn’t the only noteworthy think in this game as, after Seattle scored a try through Tommy Clark in the 79th minute to take them to within 5pts of the AGs, they declined to take the conversion. Instead, they would rather speed up the restart to give them more time to score again which, unfortunately, did not pay off. The Gilgronis left the PNW as 31-36 victors.

2021 – RD 12: Seattle Seawolves v Utah Warriors

The Utah Warriors travel to Washington State to face the Seawolves at Starfire Stadium.

This game between the two Western Conference rivals went down to the very last tough of the ball. By the 50th minute, Seattle were ahead by a score of 28-15 and holding firm before a Jurie van Vuuren try and Calvin Whiting conversion brough the Warriors to within 6 points. It looked as though the seawall had recovered however, and Seattle were on the attack in the closing stages of the game. Uncharacteristically, AJ Alatimu missed two penalty attempts before Utah were able to set up an attacking platform in the Seattle half.

What came next seemed almost inevitable. The Warriors kept the pressure up until eventually Olive Kilifi rumbled over for an 80th minute try. This made the score 28-27 with just the game-deciding conversion to come, with which Calvin Whiting made no mistake to steal victory from the jaws of defeat in front of a heartbroken Seattle crowd.

2021 – RD 10: Seattle Seawolves v Rugby ATL

2021 – RD 8: Seattle Seawolves v San Diego Legion

The San Diego Legion travel up the West Coast to face the Seawolves at Starfire Stadium, and write another chapter in the already storied rivalry between these two teams.

2021 – RD 7: Seattle Seawolves v Rugby United New York

The Seattle Seawolves host Rugby United New York as the men from the big apple travel to the Pacific Northwest.

Perhaps no game in Major League Rugby could be defined as a ‘game of two halves’ more than this one. The Seawolves ran out to a 21-3 lead at the half time whistle, with NY only having a single penalty kick against Seattle’s 3 converted tries. The second half was a completely different story, with Rugby United NY scoring 20 unanswered points including a Dan Hollinshead penalty in the 76th minute to take NY ahead of the 2-time MLR champs, with the game finishing 21-23 in favour of the visitors.

2020 – RD 5: Seattle Seawolves v Utah Warriors

The Utah Warriors travel up to Starfire Stadium to face the back-to-back Major League Rugby Champs, the Seattle Seawolves.

The Seawolves held a 28-21 lead at the 75 minute mark before Stephan Coetzee was yellow carded, reducing Seattle to 14 men. Shortly afterwards, the ref awarded Utah a penalty try to bring the score to 28-28 with minutes to play. Seawolves points machine Brock Staller slotted a penalty in the 79th minute to give Seattle a 31-28 lead and surelysecuring the game.

The Warriors however, had other ideas. In a remarkable passage of play, Utah managed to score a game-winning try in the 88th minute of play to snatch the victory away from Seattle by a score of 31-33. This would turn out to be the last MLR game of the 2020 season for both sides, as the season would be postponed for 30 days on March 12, 2020, and then cancelled on March 19, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

2020 – RD 4: Seattle Seawolves v New England Free Jacks

The Free Jacks travel up to Washington State to face the Seawolves at Starfire stadium. Kick off for this game was delayed for roughly 30minues due to lightning in the area.

Once the game did get started, the home crowd was treated to a combined 10 tries, split evenly at 5 for each team. The game ended 44-29 to Seattle, with the difference being a flawless 8/8 performance from Seawolves fly-half Ben Cima. This gave the reigning champions their first win of the season, with their 2020 record improving to 1-3.

2020 – RD 3: Seattle Seawolves v Toronto Arrows

The Toronto Arrows travel to the Pacific Northwest to take on the Seattle Seawolves at Starfire Stadium in a repeat of the 2019 MLR Semi-final that saw the Seawolves defeat the Arrows to advance to the 2019 Major League Rugby final.

While the match up was the same, the result was very different. The Arrows led early from the boot of Sam Malcolm and despite Seattle scoring the first try 25 minutes in, they only held the lead for 7 minutes before Arrows Captain Dan Moor scored to give Toronto back the lead which they held on to for the rest of the game, emerging with a comfortable 17-39 win to hand Seattle their 3rd defeat on the trot and secure Toronto’s 3rd victory.

Sam Malcolm shined for the Arrows, setting an MLR record with his 9/9 performance from the tee. The highest 100% success rate in a single MLR match. At the conclusion of the 2022 MLR season, Malcolm’s 24pts was still T-2nd for in MLR history for points scored by a single player in an MLR game.

2019 – SF 2: Seattle Seawolves v Toronto Arrows

The second semifinal in the 2019 Major League Rugby competition saw the 3rd seeded Toronto Arrows travel west to face the reigning MLR champs, the 2nd seeded Seattle Seawolves. This game is the first playoff appearance for the Toronto Arrows after a strong performance in their opening season.

The Arrows fell to a 20-0 deficit before fighting their way back to a 23-17 game with just over 15 minutes to go. A 68th minute yellow card to Peter Milazzo AND penalty try awarded to Seattle took the score to 30-17, and out of reach for the league’s only Canadian team. The Seawolves book their place in the 2019 MLR final against the San Diego Legion, their 2018 Semifinal opponents.

2019 – RD 19: Seattle Seawolves v Austin Elite

A comfortable Seawolves victory in the last round of the 2019 Major League Rugby regular season meant that the Austin Elite finished their 2nd MLR season with a record of 0-16. This was the first winless season in MLR history.
