2021 – RD 2: Houston SaberCats v New England Free Jacks

The New England Free Jacks travelled to the Space City to face the SaberCats at AVEVA Stadium.

Unfortuntely for the Houston crowd, they weren’t given much to cheer about. The Free Jacks scored in the first minute through Pieter Jansen and never looked back, shutting out the Cats with a score of 0-32. This is despite the Free Jacks receiving 3 yellow cards throughout the match, including 2 in the first quarter which put them down to 13 men for about 8 minutes.

This was the 3rd shut out in Major League Rugby history and at the time this was the largest, surpassing a 22-0 effort from the Raptors over the Arrows in 2019.

2021 – RD 1: Houston SaberCats v Seattle Seawolves

The Houston SaberCats get their 2021 season off to a fantastic start, hosting the back-to-back champion Seattle Seawolves at AVEVA Stadium, and emerging victorious.

A scoreline of 30-24 meant that the Seawolves still took away a bonus point from this game, but it was the Cats that took the lion’s share of the points. Two of Houston’s 3 tries were directly under the posts, with captain Zach Pangelinan scoring the first 7pt try in franchise history in the 35th minute, followed by Paula Balekana in the 55th minute.

2020 – RD 5: Houston SaberCats v Austin Gilgronis

The only Battle of Texas of the 2020 Major League Rugby season saw the Austin Gilgronis travel to the AVEVA stadium to take on the SaberCats. This game was the first time that the ‘Texas Cup’ was contested, a new intra-season trophy to be fought between (in 2020) Austin and Houston.

Austin came away victorious, earning their first win since June of 2018 in what would turn out to be the last MLR game of the 2020 season for both sides, as the season would be postponed for 30 days on March 12, 2020, and then cancelled on March 19, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

2020 – RD 3: Houston SaberCats v OId Glory DC

2020 – RD 1: Houston SaberCats v Colorado Raptors

The first fixture of Major League Rugby’s 2020 season saw the Glendale Raptors, rebranded to the Colorado Raptors, travel to the Lone Star State to face the Houston SaberCats at Aveva Stadium.

In perhaps a shock based on previous results of this match-up, Houston came out on top with a 21-12 victory.

2019 – RD 16: Houston SaberCats v Glendale Raptors

The Glendale Raptors travel to the Lone Star State to face the SaberCats at Aveva Stadium. This game took place on May 29th, 2019 after being postponed from the original date of May 11, 2019, during Round 16.

2019 – RD 18: Houston SaberCats v Austin Elite

2019 – RD 12: Houston SaberCats v Seattle Seawolves

The Seawolves travel down to Texas to face the SaberCats in the first game held at Houston’s new Aveva Stadium. It would not be the welcome that the ‘Cats planned, going down 10-52 to the reigning champs, in what was the largest winning margin in MLR history at the time.
