2025 – RD 1: Miami Sharks v Old Glory DC
The 2025 Major League Rugby season kicks off with the Miami Sharks hosting Old Glory DC in an Eastern Conference clash. The Sharks will be looking to make a push for the post-season in 2025, while the Flags will look to finally get the better of their Eastern rivals, the Free Jacks.
The visitors got off to a dream start, with two Axel Muller tries in the opening 20 minutes. Jason Robertson put both conversions wide, but the flags still had a 0-10 lead early. Whether it was the visitors taking a breath, or the home side waking up, the Sharks began to pull the momentum back towards them, and tries from Ma’ake Muti and Tomas Cubilla, along a pair from Mauro Rebussone, gave the Miami Sharks a 29-10 lead deep into the second half, but Old Glory DC weren’t done yet. Replacement hooker KoiKoiNelligan got DC moving again, and Robertson made up for his early errors off the tee with a lovely linebreak to score and convert his own try in the 76th minute, before a dramatic finish.
Old GLory DC had a penalty in the dying stages of the game, and kicked for touch. The lineout was stolen my Miami and with the clock in the red all the Sharks needed to do was find touch…but the kick was charged down, and DC reclaimed possession! With a hail mary, Robertson launched a crossfield kick for Axel Muller, who got on the end of it after it was mishandled by the Sharks defender. Muller completed his hat trick to tie the score at 29-29 with the conversion to come. Robertson got the early season jitters out of the way early, and made no mistakes to give Old Glory a memorable victory at the death, kicking off the 2025 season with a wonderful game that the Sharks will be disappointed to have blown that opportunity at home.
2024 – RD 17: Miami Sharks v Old Glory DC
The Miami Sharks host Old Glory DC at Autonation Sports Field in Fort Lauderdale for their final home game of their inaugural season.
The Florida heat and humidity made this game a low scoring game defined by handling errors and set pieces, with the scoring split the by half time break. The hosts scored their entire 17pts in the first half with tries from Ben Bonasso and Manu Ardao, to take a 17-0 lead into the sheds as the visitors really struggled with the conditions. They recovered slightly in the second half, scoring 12pts of their own on tries from Cory Daniel and a late John Powers score, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit. The final score was 17-12 to the Sharks after DC intentionally kicked the ball dead themselves, essentially taking the loss.
There was a reacon for this however, the Sharks needed either a BP win or to hold DC to 0pts, so had the Sharks scored again, it would push DC out of losing BP range and the Sharks playoff hopes would still be alive. With DC taking the losing BP, they clinch their spot in the post-season, and eliminate the Sharks. Despite the win, the Sharks playoff push ends here after an impressive inaugural season in which they defeated NOLA, New England, and now DC.
2024 – RD 15: Miami Sharks v NOLA Gold
The Miami Sharks host the NOLA Gold at Autonation Sports Field in Fort Lauderdale, in an Eastern Conference Southern Showdown.
The NOLA Gold had the chance to clinch their first playoff spot in club history with a win here, as long as they didn’t let the Sharks pick up 2+ points in the standings. The warm Florida weather and very high humidity made this game a bit of a slog for both sides, and the Sharks seemed more at home early on. Scoring was hard to come by, with NOLA opening their account first, 22 minutes in. despite falling 0-3 down, Santiago Videla levelled the score with a penalty of his own 5 minutes later, and it looked as though we would head for the sheds with the score at only 3-3, but a Tomas Inciarte try on the stroke of HT gave the hosts the lead into the second frame.
This lead wouldn’t last long however, as Augusto Bohme would hit back 4 minutes into the 2nd half, and Dorian Jones made no mistakes with the conversion to level the game up once more, at 10-10. Videla’s boot would be called on once more a few minutes later, restoring a slim Sharks lead before a flurry of substitutions from both sides. The difference came just before the hour mark, when a Malcolm May score gave the Gold the lead and they defended it well. The conversion from Jones was on target again, and he would add a penalty with 5 minutes left in the game as an insurance marker, and the Sharks weren’t able to respond.
The NOLA Gold will be heading to the MLR Playoffs for the first time in their history, the only remaining founding member club to have not made it before this season.
