2025 – RD 6: Anthem RC v Houston SaberCats

Anthem RC host the Houston SaberCats in a cross-conference clash at American Legion Memorial Stadium during Round 6 of MLR’s 2025 season! Both teams are fresh after byes last week, but Anthem RC are still looking for a first franchise victory. Will they get it against a formidable SaberCats side?

It was a back and forth, high-scoring game that went down to the final moments, as the Houston SaberCats were spared their blushes thanks to a last minute penalty nailed by Davy Coetzer, to bag the full 5pts in a 91pt, 14 try thriller in Charlotte! Anthem RC are getting closer to that first franchise victory, and with another two table points in this one, are moving in the right direction. Scoring 45pts and not coming away with the victory is bound to sting, however. This was the most points and tries ever scored by Anthem RC in a single game, and with 440pts scored all time, this game alone accounts for over 10% of the points the team has ever scored up to this point.

2025 – RD 3: Anthem RC v Miami Sharks

The Miami Sharks travel to the Queen City to face Anthem RC in an Eastern Conference clash in Round 3 of the 2025 MLR season. The Miami Sharks are fresh off their first win of the season over the NOLA Gold, despite another nervy finish, and Anthem RC are still looking for their first franchise victory after a disappointing 5-52 defeat to the formidable San Diego Legion.

These teams have met twice in the past, with the Miami Sharks holding a 2-0 series lead. Their last meeting came in Round 16 of 2024, when the Sharks recorded a 14-30 bonus point victory, also in Charlotte.

A truly back and forth game that saw both sides exchanging both tries and yellow cards throughout. Anthem saw themselves down to 13 men for almost 10 minutes to straddle the half, but defended admirably and led 31-22 at th 60 minute mark. The Sharks would hit back with a penalty from Martin Elias, followed by a 72nd minute try from Tomas Bekerman before Santiago Videla calmly slotted the conversion to give the visitors the narrowest of leads with 7 minutes to play. The final minutes saw plenty of changes in possession, but ultimately Anthem couldn’t crack the Sharks defence, and Miami deliver another thrilling finale to an exciting Friday night game to move to 2-1. Anthem are left imagining what could’ve been, as they secure both bonus points and come closer than ever to their first victory, but it was not to be.

2024 – RD 1: Anthem RC v New England Free Jacks

The Reigning Champion New England Free Jacks travel to Charlotte to face MLR’s newest team, Anthem Rugby Carolina.

Unsurprising to many, this proved a baptism of fire for Anthem. The Free Jacks got on the board after 4 minutes through the forwards, with Cam Davidowicz scoring the first try of 2024 for the defending champs, and they never looked back. In total, the Free Jacks tallied 8 tries including 3 from Reece MacDonald, the 32nd hattrick in MLR history and 3rd by a Free Jack. He also gained 222m in this game alone, a season-high and good enough for the 4th best in MLR history.

Anthem RC didn’t just roll over however. Oscar Koller recorded a penalty to score the first points in MLR history for the team, and they picked up 2 tries in the 2nd half with Mateo Gadsden recording the first try in franchise history.
