Season: MLR 2026

The 9th season of Major League Rugby saw the merging of the San Diego Legion and Rugby FC LA to form the California Legion, as well as the withdrawal of multiple teams to take the league from 11 sides in 2025, to 6 in 2026.

Todd Dammers

Australian Todd Dammers coached in Major League Rugby between 2025-2026. He served as Forwards Coach to the Chicago Hounds for his entire MLR career.

The Hounds announced the addition of Dammers on 2nd October 2024 under head coach Chris Latham, alongside for Leinster, London Irish, and Toronto Arrows man Noel Reid who served as the Hounds’ Backs Coach in 2025. Dammers had previously worked with Latham while serving as Head Coach of the Souths Premier Rugby club in Australia, with Latham as Attack Coach. Dammers also served as Director of Rugby at Brisbane Boys College.

Chris Latham

Ex-Wallaby Chris Latham has served as a coach in MLR in 2020, and again between 2024-2026. He served as Head Coach of the Utah Warriors (2020), Assistant Coach for the Seattle Seawolves (2024), and Head Coach of the Chicago Hounds (2025-2026).

Latham’s playing career saw him represent the Wests Bulldogs in the Australian Premier League, as well as the NSW Waratahs for the 1997/98 Super 12 (now Super Rugby) season. Latham moved to the Queensland Reds ahead of the 1998/99 season and earned over 100 Super Rugby caps for the Reds between 1998-2008. While playing for the Reds in 1998, Latham earned his test debut for the Wallabies and appeared in 78 games for Australia, representing them at Three Rugby World Cups, winning in 1999, finishing 2nd in 2003, and recovered from an ACL injury to represent Australia in 2007. He scored 40 test tries (2nd in Wallabies history) including 5 against Nambia at the 2003 RWC, where Australia finished as runners-up to England. Following an impressive international career, Latham signed with the Worcester Warriors in the English Premiership in 2008, earning just shy of 50 appearances for the English side between 2008-2010, when Latham signed with Kyuden Voltex in Japan, where he played until he retired in 2012.

Latham is no stranger to Major League Rugby, having served as Head Coach of the Utah Warriors during the truncated 2020 season, where the Warriors went 2-1-2 before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the league to cancel the season. Latham stepped down ahead of 2021 due to personal reasons, he returned to his native Australia and continued his coaching career before joining the Seattle Seawolves as an Assistant Coach for the 2024 season when Seattle finished as MLR Runners-up. Latham returned to the Head Coach role on 11th September 2024 when the Chicago Hounds announced him as their head coach ahead of the 2025 MLR Season. In his first year in Chicago, Latham led the Hounds to a team record 11-5 finish (2nd in the Eastern Conference) and defeated Old Glory DC to advance to the Eastern Conference Final, falling to the New England Free Jacks in heartbreaking fashion.

Latham returned as Head Coach of the Hounds in 2026, where the team were utterly dominant. Latham led the Hounds to an undefeated regular season with a 10-0 record and the maximum of 50pts in the standings, before demolishing Old Glory DC in the Semifinals to earn a spot in the Championship Game which happened to take place in Chicago. On a soaking wet evening in front of their own fans, Latham’s Hounds dispatched the California Legion to earn their first MLR Shield and secure the first undefeated season in league history, 12-0. Unsurprisingly, Chris Latham was named MLR Coach of the Year for this incredible achievement in 2026.

Ryan Martin

New Zealander Ryan Martin Coached in Major League Rugby in 2021, and again from 2025-2026. He served as Head Coach of the New England Free Jacks for his entire MLR career.

Martin began coaching at grassroots level in his native New Zealand, spending 17 years in schools before coaching professionally. He started with Otago Boys’ High School, coaching the squad to national finals and a 64-game unbeaten streak. In 2016 his talents were rewarded when he was given the opportunity to coach the New Zealand Barbarians Schools side. He moved up to the Otago NPC side in 2018, serving as their Attack & Backs coach between 2018-2020 before MLR came calling. Named as the Head Coach of the New England Free Jacks following their inaugural MLR season in 2020, the Free Jacks banked a strong 10-6 record under Coach Martin.

Upon the conclusion of the 2021 MLR season, Martin was presented with an opportunity to coach at Super Rugby level, serving as the Attack & Backs Coach for the Melbourne Rebels between 2021-2022, before moving to Japan and serving the same role for Toyota Verblitz under Steve Hansen. When Scott Mathie departed New England for Edinburgh in the URC after back-to-back Shields, Martin returned to the Head Coach role with the Free Jacks early in the off-season, ahead of the 2025 MLR season. He re-joined the Free Jacks from Northland in New Zealand’s NPC competition, where he was serving as attack coach for the 2024/25 season. Despite a rocky start to the 2025 season, the Free Jacks recovered to record an 11-5 record in 2025 and top the Eastern Conference. Playoff victories against the Miami Sharks and a thriller with the Chicago Hounds in the Eastern Conference Final meant the Free Jacks met the Houston SaberCats in the 2025 final, emerging as 27-22 victors to secure their 3rd successive MLR Shield, the first of Ryan Martin’s career.

With MLR adjusting their eligibility rules to focus more on domestic talent, the Free Jacks core of Canadian talent had to be broken up and as a result, the Free Jacks underwent more change than any other team ahead of the 2026 season. Unsurprisingly, the team took a step back that season and recorded a 3-7 record under Ryan Martin, missing out on the postseason for the first time since 2021. On 22nd July 2026, the Free Jacks announced that they had re-signed Martin for a 5th season as Head Coach in 2027.

Allan Clarke

Northern Irish ex-player Allan Clarke coached in Major League Rugby between 2021-2026. He was appointed as Director of Rugby (DoR) of the Dallas Jackals in 2020, and moved to the Seattle Seawolves following the Jackals’ decision to defer their MLR entry to 2021, where he served as both Head Coach and DoR.

Capped 8 times for Ireland between 1995-1998, Clarke hails from Dungannon in Northern Ireland. He played with the Northampton Saints in England between 1993-1998, before winning a European Cup with Ulster in 1999. He finished his playing career in 2001 due to injury.

On the coaching side, Clarke has had an excellent career. He returned to the Ulster set up to establish their player pathway before being promoted to Assistant Coach. He joined the IRFU as High Performance Manager, also coaching the Ireland U20s to a U20 Six nations victory in 2010 before returning to an Assistant Coach role at Ulster. In 2017 he headed to Wales to join Ospreys as their Forwards Coach, before being promoted to Head Coach in 2018 where he served until 2020 when he was appointed DoR of the Jackals, then moving to the Seawolves once the Jackals pushed their entry into MLR to 2021. He has served as both Head Coach and Director of Rugby for the Seattle Seawolves since 2021, recording two Runner-Up finished in 2022 & 2024, and an overall record of 44-35-2 in charge through the 2025 season.

Simon Cross

Raised in Scotland but born in Mauritius, ex-player Simon Cross coached in Major League Rugby between 2024-2026. He served as Head Coach of Old Glory DC for his entire MLR career.

At club level, Simon Cross developed in the London Wasps system between 2000-2003, captaining their U21 side to victory in the 2003 U21 Premiership Final against Bristol at Twickenham. In 2003 he joined Edinburgh Rugby, captaining the side from 2007-2010 before retiring due to persistent knee injuries. Internationally, Cross represented Scotland U19s in 2000, and turned down the opportunity to play with England U21s in 2002.

Despite being born in Mauritius while his English father served in the British Army, Cross has Scottish heritage and always considered himself Scottish. He was named to several Scotland training squads and was even named on the Scotland bench during the 2004 Six Nations, but never received a test cap for Scotland. Cross did, however, represent the Scotland Sevens team during the 2006/07 World Sevens Series.

Following his retirement as a player in 2010, Cross turned to coaching and was named First Team Coach of the Edinburgh Accies in the Scottish National League D1 from 2010-2012 before coaching in the Scotland U20s setup from 2012-2013, when he joined Premiership side Worcester Warriors as Defence Coach in 2013. Cross coached with Worcester from 2013-2022. Shortly after the end of the MLR season in July 2023, Cross headed Stateside to take up the Head Coach role with Old Glory DC for the 2024 season, a team part-owned by the Scottish RFU at the time. Cross served as Head Coach for the Flags from 2024-2026, qualifying for the playoffs each year in charge and recording an overall record of 19-2-24.

In early September 2026, following that year’s MLR season, Old GLory DC announced that Simon Cross was stepping down as Head Coach and transitioning to Director of Rugby Development & Player Pathways, where he would be in charge of the re-vamped Young Glory DC academy side.

Agustin Cavalieri

Argentinian former player Agustin Cavalieri has coached in Major League Rugby since 2023. He has been a member of the Dallas Jackals (2023-2024), Anthem RC (2025-2026), and Old Glory DC (2027) coaching teams, as well as USA Rugby.

As a player, Cavalieri represented Argentina’s age grade sides up to Los Pumitas U21s before heading to Europe in 2003, representing Arras and Limoges for a year before heading to Italy where he spent the majority of his career. He primarily represented Petrarca Padova and Calvisano but also had stints with L’Aquila and Prato and even represented the Italy ‘A’ side. Cavalieri was player-coach with Calvisano when he called time on his playing career in 2019.

Cavalieri stepped into the Head Coach role with the Dallas Jackals ahead of the 2023 season having previously served as Forwards Coach for the Italian U20 side. He steered the Jackals for two seasons from 2023-2024, turning what had been a 0-16 team in 2022 into a playoff contender and conference finalist in 2024 and recording the first win in franchise history. Despite an overall record of 8-24 with the Jackals, they were arguably one of the most entertaining teams to watch and would have only continued to improve had they not withdrawn from MLR. Following this withdrawal, Agustin Cavalieri took up an Assistant coach role with the newly established MLR, USA Rugby, and World Rugby franchise, Anthem RC under Alama Ieremia.

Cavalieri served as Assistant Coach during from Anthem’s inaugural season in 2024, through to Round 12 of the 2025 season when Ieremia stepped back to focus on his other role of USA Men’s Assistant Coach. Cavalieri took over as Head Coach from Round 13 of the 2025 season, although could not prevent the team recording their 2nd 0-16 season in a row in 2025. In October 2025, USA Rugby announced that Alama Ieremia had stepped down from his roles with both USA Rugby and Anthem RC, and Agustin Cavalieri had joined the national Men’s team coaching setup as Assistant Coach (Forwards & Breakdown) alongside his role as Anthem RC Head Coach, which he continued with into the 2026 season. His first full year at the helm of Anthem starting strongly. The Rising Stars broke a MLR record 32-game losing streak to earn their first ever franchise victory in their first game of the season against the California Legion, with Cavalieri now able to boast that he led two previously winless franchises to their first even wins. Anthem followed up this victory with another win over the Seattle Seawolves two weeks later to sit with a 2-1 record after 3 games. From here however, Anthem reverted to their old ways and would go on a 7-game losing streak to finish the season despite remaining compeititive, and were still mathematically able to reach the postseason on the final weekend of the season, but finished 6th.

Following the 2026 MLR season and the cessation of World Rugby Funding for Anthem RC, the team ceased operations. All players and staff became free agents, including Cuca Cavalieri. On 30th September, Old Glory DC announced that they had hired Cavalieri as their Head Coach for the 2027 season following Simon Cross’ move to Director of Rugby Development and Player Pathways on August 24th. With this move, Cavalieri becomes just the 2nd Head Coach in MLR history to have taken charge of 3 different teams, following Steve Hoiles (Giltinis, RFCLA, California Legion).

Koby Baker

North Carolina native Koby Baker played in Major League Rugby between 2024-2026. He represented the Seattle Seawolves (2024), and the Chicago Hounds (2025-2026).

Baker played rugby through high school, representing the SA Rugby Boys High School All-Americans Sevens Team in his senior year in 2019. He then moved to Wales to attend Cardiff Metropolitan University (which has produced a number of MLR-ers) between 2019-2022, during which time he played rugby in the BUCS league in the UK. He then went to play in Australia for the 2023/24 season, before returning to the US to play with the American Raptors for their 2024 Super Rugby Americas season.

Once the Raptors’ 2024 SRA season concluded, Baker signed with the Seattle Seawolves for their 2024 MLR Playoff push. He earned 5 appearances off the bench for the Seawolves, appearing in all three Seawolves playoff games including the 2024 Championship Final, finishing as runners-up to the New England Free Jacks. On January 6th, 2025, the Chicago Hounds announced the signing of Koby Baker for the 2025 MLR season after playing with their academy side in the fall of 2024. He earned an additional two appearances for the Hounds off the bench that year to take his career total to 7, while continuing to play with the Hounds academy side.

Following an impressive fall season with the Chicago Hounds’ Autumn Performance Squad, with whom he started games against the Midwest Thunderbirds and Canada’s Pacific Pride, the Chicago Hounds announced the return of Koby Baker to the MLR squad on 13th January, 2026. That season Baker set a new career high for appearances, playing in 6 of the Hounds’ 10 regular season games to help the team finish with a perfect 10-0 record. Baker finished the year as an MLR Champion as the Hounds dominated in the postseason to lift their first Shield after defeating the California Legion in miserable conditions in front of a home crowd. Following the 2026 MLR Season on 4th August, the Chicago Hounds announced a high-performance partnership with Waikato in New Zealand’s National Provincial Championship (NPC). As part of this partnership, Baker headed to New Zealand with fellow Hounds Jake Kinneeveauk and Jackson Zabierek to spend 3 months with the NPC side.

California native Jackson Zabierek played in Major League Rugby between 2024-2026. He represented the Seattle Seawolves (2024) and the Chicago Hounds (2025-2026).

Zabierek played football during high school, and also played rugby with Lamorinda RFC in California. He attended the University of Santa Cruz between 2019-2023, captaining the team from 2020 until his graduation. Zabierek has represented the USA U23 team, as well as the California Grizzlies on their 2023 tour of Chile. Upon his graduation from USC, Zabierek declared for the 2023 MLR Collegiate Draft where he was selected in the 2nd Round (18th Overall) by Rugby ATL, who had already been relocated to Los Angeles as Rugby FC LA.

Although drafted by RFCLA, Zabierek instead represented the American Raptors during their 2024 Super Rugby Americas campaign. When the SRA season ended, he signed with the Seattle Seawolves for their 2024 playoff run, earning his first MLR start and 6 appearances as the Seawolves advanced to the 2024 Championship game where they fell 11-20 to the New England Free Jacks. Zabierek came off the bench in all 3 playoff games for the Seawolves in 2024, including the Championship game.

On January 5th, 2025, the Chicago Hounds announced the signing of Jackson Zabierek for the 2025 season, where he served as the regular back-up hooker in a strong Hounds side. He doubled his appearance total from the season before, featuring in 12 games and earning his first start in the final week of the 2025 regular season, where he scored his first two MLR tries and was selected for the MLR Team of the Week. On 23rd December 2025, the Chicago Hounds confirmed the return of Jackson Zabierek for his 2nd season with the team in 2026. He appeared in 8 of the Hounds’ 10 regular season games in 2026, starting once as the Hounds went undefeated to qualify for the playoffs where Zabierek came off the bench in both games including the 2026 Championship Game to help the team claim the Shield with a perfect 12-0 season.

Following the 2026 season on 4th August, the Chicago Hounds announced a high-performance partnership with Waikato in New Zealand’s National Provincial Championship (NPC). As part of this partnership, Zabierek headed to New Zealand with fellow Hounds Koby Baker and Jake Kinneeveauk to spend 3 months with the NPC side.

US-Eligible through is mother who was born in Indiana and raised in San Diego, Crimp attended Cardiff Met University in the United Kingdom, a university that has produced a surprising amount of MLR-ers for a Non-North American school, including Toronto’s Adrian Wadden. Crimp represented the USA U20 side against Canada in June 2023, and was named to the extended USA Eagles squad for their July 2024 tests after training with the San Diego Legion U23 squad.

Anthem RC, a partnership between MLR, USA Rugby, and World Rugby to develop the next generation of Eagles ahead of their hosting the Men’s Rugby World Cup in 2031, announced the signing of then-20yo Steffan Crimp on 31st May 2024. It is assumed that Crimp was signed prior to the MLR signing deadline of May 16th. With US-Eligible flyhalves few and far between, Crimp is one to watch. He earned 4 MLR appearances (3 starts) for Anthem RC at the tail end of the 2024 regular season. On November 15th, 2024, the San Diego Legion announced the signing of Steffan Crimp for their 2025 MLR season. Crimp took a step forward in his 2nd season of MLR competition, with 6 starts in 7 games for the Legion, scoring 2 tries and 26pts (53.85% from the tee) and gaining just over 275m as the Legion missed out on the postseason by a single point.

Oscar Lennon

US-eligible Welsh scrumhalf Oscar Lennon played in Major League Rugby between 2024-2026. He represented the New England Free Jacks for his entire MLR career.

Lennon played with Hartpury University RFC in the English system, winning promotion to the 2nd tier, the Greene King IPA Championship before signing with English Premiership side the Bristol Bears in July of 2022. Lennon represented the Bears in the Premiership Rugby Cup, Premiership, and the Champions Cup. Although Welsh, Lennon is US-eligible through his father, who was born in Ohio.

On 29th May 2024, the New England Free Jacks announced that Lennon would be joining the club, along with former Bears teammate Toby Fricker and New Zealand flanker Jed Melvin, as MLR signing deadline (May 16th) reinforcements. Lennon scored 1 try in 5 games (4 starts) for the Free Jacks, including starting all 3 of their Playoff games (meaning Lennon appeared in more playoff games than regular season games in 2024!) where his only try came against Old Glory DC in their 29-33 Eastern Conference Semifinal victory, en route to the 2024 Championship Game, where he helped the Free Jacks defeat the Seattle Seawolves to become back-to-back MLR Champions.

On October 29th, 2024, the New England Free Jacks announced the return of Oscar Lennon for the 2025 MLR season where he more than tripled his appearance total from the 2024 season. Lennon earned 17 appearances during the Free Jacks’ successful title defence, including a career high 5 starts. He added 2 tries and 9 conversions to take his points total to 33pts for New England, also gaining over 200m gained as a scrumhalf, and completing 60 tackles, tripling his total from 2024. Following the 2025 season, Bryan Ray of Americas Rugby News announced that Oscar Lennon had re-joined the Bristol Bears in England’s PREM Rugby competition as injury cover for capped England international Harry Randall. On 3rd December 2025, the New England Free Jacks announced the return of Oscar Lennon for his 3rd MLR season in 2026. Lennon was a standout during a difficult season for the Free Jacks in 2026. He started all 10 of their regular season games, scoring 5 tries and gaining over 200m in possession with 3 assists while completing over 50 tackles on defence. New England would miss the MLR playoffs in 2026 for the first time since 2021, but Lennon’s performance saw him named as Free Jacks’ 2026 Player of the Year as well as the Fans’ Player of the Year, awarded by the 1st Regiment Supporters Group.

On 5th August 2026, the Bristol Bears announced that Oscar Lennon was returning to the club for the 2026/27 PREM Rugby season, which would rule him out of the vast majority of the 2027 MLR season, should he return
