Isaia Lotawa

Seattle native Isaia Lotawa played in Major League Rugby between 2023-2025. He represented the Seattle Seawolves for his entire MLR career.

Lotawa attended St. Mary’s College in California between 2018-2020, playing D1A rugby for the Gaels while there. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Lotawa travelled to Natotawa in Fiji to live with his family, playing with the Fiji U23 side while there. He returned to Washington state in 2022 and enrolled at Bellevue College while also playing for local club side, Seattle RFC.

Lotawa was added to the Seattle Seawolves MLR squad as a development player in 2023, and has represented the MLR team 9 times across 2 seasons from 2023-2024. He was a part of the Seawolves side that finished as MLR Runners-Up in 2024, falling 11-20 to the New England Free Jacks in San Diego.

On 8th October 2024, RGC 1404 in Super Rygbi Cymru announced the addition of Lotawa as a part of a player exchange program. Former RGC player Huw Taylor also represented the Seawolves in 2024, and it is believe he helped to orchestrate the exchange. Lotawa’s return to the Seattle Seawolves was confirmed when he was included on their full 2025 roster on Jaunary 14th, 2025

Monate Akuei

Kenyan back row Monate Akuei played in Major League Rugby between 2023-2024. He represented the Rugby New York Ironworkers (2023) and the Seattle Seawolves (2024).

Born in South Sudan, Akuei moved to Kenya as a refugee at a young age. He began playing Rugby for a U13 side in Kenya where he worked through to the senior side and played 3 years of both 15s and 7s. Akuei has 2 caps with the Shujaa, Kenya’s National Sevens side, and 6 caps with the Simbas, the national 15s side. He moved to the United States in 2020 and played with New York’s Old Blue in the ARP since 2021.

In April 2023, the Rugby New York Ironworkers announced the addition of Akuei at the signing deadline for the remainder of the 2023 season. He earned 6 starts and 8 caps during the back half of the season, completing almost 100 tackles and gaining over 250m as a real impact player for the Ironworkers. Following the announcement in December 2023 that the Ironworkers would not compete in the 2024 MLR season, Akuei found himself out of contract and travelled to Texas to play with the Austin Blacks, before returning to Captain NY Old Blue in early 2024.

On 23rd May 2024, ARN’s Bryan Ray announced that the Seattle Seawolves had signed Akuei prior to the 2024 signing deadline (May 16th) for the remainder of the 2024 season to prop up the Seawolves‘ ailing back row. He joined a large contingent of ex-Ironworkers including Sam Windsor, Kara Pryor, and DaQuan Perry. Akuei scored 2 tries in 5 games for the Seawolves (all starts), earning 2 MLR Team of the Week selections and racking up over 150m gained and completing over 65 tackles to help the Seawolves lock down a playoffs spot. Akuei did not feature in the MLR post-season in 2024 as Seattle advanced to the Championship game, finishing as runners-up.

Justice Nkombua

Chicago-born, South African raised flanker/lock Justice Nkombua played in Major League Rugby between 2023-2024. He represented the Chicago Hounds for his entire MLR career.

Classified a domestic player due to his birth within the US, he was raised in South Africa and played for the University of Pretoria Tuks in their Young Gun competition, and then the first team in both the Varsity Cup and Carlton Cup. In 2022, he was a member of the 2022 Varsity Cup championship team. His initial move to MLR was announced by the Chicago Hounds in April 2023, part-way through their inaugural season. Nkombua earned 6 caps (1 start) for the Hounds during his debut season stateside. Following the 2023 season, he also played for the USA Hawks, a development program for young American prospects.

On 17th November 2023, the Chicago Hounds announced the return of Justice Nkombua for the 2024 MLR season.

Phillip Thiel

Former USA Eagle Phillip Thiel retired from playing professional rugby in 2015, but suited up as replacement hooker for RugbyATL during the 2023 MLR Season at age 38!

Connor Grindal

Canada-eligible Australian prop Connor Grindal played in Major League Rugby between 2023-2024. He represented the Toronto Arrows (2023) and Rugby FC LA (2024).

Born in London, England and raised in Sydney, Australia, Grindal is eligible for Canada through both his Montreal-born mother and Toronto-born father. His father Iain played rugby at provincial-level in Ontario prior to emigrating.

Grindal’s signing was announced by the Arrows in September 2022, joining from the Highlanders system in Australia having previously represented both Gordon and Sydney University. The 25yo earned 7 MLR caps (4 starts) and completed 71 tackles in his first professional season in North America. Following his season with the Arrows, Grindal returned to Australia to play with Gordon before heading to Scotland to play with Melrose (with whom the Arrows have a partnership) for the initial stages of the Scottish National League 1 season.

On 4th October 2023, the Arrows announced the re-signing of Connor Grindal for the 2024 MLR season, re-joining from Melrose in Scotland. When the Arrows announced that they would not be competing in the 2024 MLR season, Grindal opted in to the Dispersal draft for Toronto & New York players (the Ironworkers announced that they would also not compete in 2024, a week after Toronto) and was selected 24th overall by the Dallas Jackals. The day after the dispersal draft on 14th December 2023, the Jackals traded Connor Grindal to Rugby FC LA ahead of their inaugural season in 2024, and he was named on their roster about a week later.

Tomiwa Agbongbon

New Jersey born Englishman Tomiwa Agbongbon played in Major League Rugby between 2023-2024. He represented the Houston SaberCats for his entire MLR career.

Agbongbon played rugby through high school in England, and attended sport-specialty University Loughborough between 2021-2024 while playing in the BUCS league. In 2022 he represented Premiership side Leicester Tigers in the Cup competition, before moving over to the USA and earning his MLR debut off the bench for the SaberCats in 2023. Early in the 2024 season, the SaberCats announced the return of Agbongbon for that year’s campaign, where he earned 6 further appearances including his first MLR start as the Houston SaberCats would finish 1st in MLR during the regular season with a 14-2 record.

On May 31st 2024, the Ealing Trailfinders of the English Championship announced the addition of Agbongbon for their 2024/25 Championship campaign.

Luke Green

English prop Luke Green played in Major League Rugby between 2023-2024. He represented the San Diego Legion for his entire MLR career.

Green’s signing was announced by the Legion in April 2023, part way into the season. The 22yo joined from London Irish in the English Premiership, where he had been in their system since he was 15. In his debut season in North America, he earned 10 MLR caps (all starts) made up of 8 regular season games, and both Legion games in their Championship Series run to the Final, where they fell 24-25 to the New England Free Jacks.

On 10th October 2023, the San Diego Legion announced the return of Luke Green along with 3 other Legion players from 2023. As London Irish ceased operations for 2023/24, this may have influenced Green’s decision to stay in California for a second season, where he earned another 10 starts and 14 appearances. On 1st May 2024, the Northampton Saints of the English Premiership announced the signing of Luke Green for their 2024/25 season, putting an end to his stint in Major League Rugby.

Alex Horan

Australian centre Alex Horan played in Major League Rugby between 2023-2024. He represented the San Diego Legion.

The son of Wallabies legend Tim Horan, Alex’s signing was announced in November 2022 ahead of the 2023 MLR season, joining the Legion from the University of Queensland having represented the Sunwolves in 2020, their final season in Super Rugby. Horan earned his MLR debut during the Legion’s record breaking 2023 season that saw them go all the way to the Championship Final before falling to the New England Free Jacks 24-25. He earned 2 caps during the regular season (1 start).

On 2nd October 2023, the San Diego Legion announced the return of Horan along with 6 other returnees for the 2024 season.

Peter Nelson

Canada-eligible Northern Irish Fly-Half Peter Nelson played in Major League Rugby between 2023-2024. He has represented the Toronto Arrows for his entire MLR career.

Born and Raised in Dungannon, Northern Ireland, Nelson represented Ireland at both U18 & U20 levels as well as Ulster between 2011-2019. He is eligible to play for Canada through his Vancouver-born grandmother and earned his international debut in July 2019 against the United States and has earned 17 caps to date.  He was supposed to play with the Seattle Seawolves in the 2020 season, but the global COVID-19 Pandemic shut the season down before he could appear.  He instead moved to France to play with Stade Aurillac in the Pro D2 between 2021-2023. The Toronto Arrows announced Nelson’s signing in April 2023, part way through that year’s MLR season.

In his debut season in North America, Nelson earned 8 caps for the Arrows (7 starts) and scored 10pts from the tee (4/5, 80.00%). On 27th October 2023, the Arrows announced the return of Peter Nelson for the 2024 MLR season. Unfortunately, the Arrows unexpectedly withdrew from MLR in late August, and Nelson has not returned to MLR.
