League: Major League Rugby

Founded in 2017 with it’s inaugural season played in 2018, Major League Rugby (MLR) is the highest level of professional rugby in North America.

2021 – RD 7: Seattle Seawolves v Rugby United New York

The Seattle Seawolves host Rugby United New York as the men from the big apple travel to the Pacific Northwest.

Perhaps no game in Major League Rugby could be defined as a ‘game of two halves’ more than this one. The Seawolves ran out to a 21-3 lead at the half time whistle, with NY only having a single penalty kick against Seattle’s 3 converted tries. The second half was a completely different story, with Rugby United NY scoring 20 unanswered points including a Dan Hollinshead penalty in the 76th minute to take NY ahead of the 2-time MLR champs, with the game finishing 21-23 in favour of the visitors.

2021 – RD 7: LA Giltinis v Old Glory DC

The LA Giltinis host Old Glory DC in the second of two back-to-back games at LA Memorial Coliseum during Round 7 of Major League Rugby’s 2021 season.

OGDC would get on the board first with Jason Robertson slotting a penalty in the 5th minute, but LA would respond by scoring all 47 of their points unanswered between the 10th & 60th minutes, with DC picking up their 2 tries in quick succession in the 71st and 73rd minute. A final score of 47-17 saw DC limp away from LA, thoroughly beaten.

2021 – RD 7: San Diego Legion v New England Free Jacks

The San Diego Legion are billed as the ‘Home’ team against the Free Jacks in the first half of a double-header in LA.

The LA Memorial Coliseum hosted back-to-back Major League Rugby games in Round 7 of the 2021 season, with this game coming before the Giltinis face Old Glory DC.

New England cruised to an easy 17-33 victory after 3 tries before the 20 minute mark put the Legion on the back foot. All 17 of San Diego’s points came in the final 30 minutes of the game.

2021 – RD 6: Rugby United New York v Toronto Arrows

The Toronto Arrows travel to the big apple to face Rugby United New York at Cochrane Stadium.

The home side got off to a promising start, with Luke Hume dotting down after only 3 minutes to give the hosts a 5-0 lead early! This try however, would be the only points that NY would score in the first half. The Arrows would score 3 of their own to give the visitors a 5-19 lead at the break, and Toronto did not slow down. The final score was 12-53 to the guests, with Manuel Montero scoring the first hattrick in franchise history for the Arrows, and the 11th hattrick in MLR history.

This was the 2nd time that Toronto had scored 50+pts in 2021, and the first time that any team scored over 50pts in back-to-back games in Major League Rugby! The Arrows had outscored their opponents 105-19 over their last two games.

2021 – RD 6: Utah Warriors v Houston SaberCats

The Utah Warriors host the Houston SaberCats at Zions Bank Stadium in one of the most action packed games in Major League Rugby History!

A total of 13 tries saw the Warriors emerge victorious in a 93pt game, by a score of 50-43. This was the 4th time in the 2021 season that a team scored 50+ points, and was the highest scoring game of the 2021 season. As of the conclusion of the 2022 season, this game was still the 5th highest scoring game in MLR history!

Houston fly-half Robbie Povey scored a hattrick in this game, which was the 1st hattrick in Franchise history for the SaberCats, and the 12th hattrick in MLR history!

2021 – RD 6: LA Giltinis v San Diego Legion

The LA Giltinis host their California rivals, the San Diego Legion at the LA Memorial Coliseum.

The home side came out of the gates flying, and had secured the try BP by the 21st minute of the game. The Giltinis scored 3 tries within the first 10 minutes and were up 17-0 before the Legion really settled in to the game. The final score was 45-17 to LA.
