2026 – RD 4: California Legion v Seattle Seawolves

The California Legion host the Seattle Seawolves in a Pacific Coast clash during Round 4 of the 2026 MLR season, a Sunday Night Rugby marquee matchup.

The California Legion enter the sole LA fixture looking to bounce back from a tough 48-24 loss to the Hounds up in a very wet Chicago, while the Seattle Seawolves also need to recover after a 34-25 loss away in Charlotte to Anthem RC. Both teams currently sit on 1 win, with the Legion having 2 losses with 1 more game played than Seattle.

The hosts came out firing, putting pressure on the Seawolves defence but it held firm and in the 13th minute, despite barely any possession thus far, the Seawolves opened the scoring following an interception from Davy Coetzer who converted his own score to give the guests the lead! This lead was extended 5 minutes later when Calvin Liulamaga, on his first career MLR start, collected an inside ball from Duncan Matthews for his 1st career MLR try! Coetzer added the extras and the Seawolves were up to 0-14 at the first hydration break. Coming out of this break, the Legion seemed to find their cutting edge, and after some slick interplay from Cassh Maluia and Ben Houston, 2025 5th overall pick Oscar Treacy almost walked in for his first career try on his MLR debut to put the Legion on the board. It would be another 10 minutes in the California heat before the next try, during which time Davy Coetzer slotted a penalty to push Seattle’s lead to 7-15, but the Legion would strike out wide onace again in the 35th minute, with Maluia again barging through the Seawolves line before some crisp passing between Joey Mano and Corbin Smith put the latter through for a try on his Legion debut. With that, the score sat at 14-15 at the half-time break, and was shaping up to be another west coast classic.

The Legion started the 2nd half as they ended the first, and quickly got on the front foot thanks to a line break from Gonzalo Bertranou before winning a penalty that was taken quickly and fed to Ben Houston who caught the Seawolves napping to give the Legion their first lead of the afternoon. Houston’s try was cancelled out a few minutes later however, when Davy Coetzer decided that he was a back row player, and barrelled through 3/4 Legion defenders to claim his 2nd of the game, before converting his own score once again to restore a narrow Seattle lead, 21-22 with 30 minutes to play. It would be almost 20 minutes before the next score despite a few challenges and reviews but in the 68th minute, Declan Leaney took advantage of a gap following a quick pick up and fed it to the supporting Bertranou to flip the lead back over to the Legion, before Joey Mano finished an easy score out wide less than 5 minutes later to give the Legion a strong 35-21 lead with 8 minutes to go. The visiting Seawolves, reeling after these two quick scores, were able to hit back through Liki Chan-Tung to secure the try BP in the 75th minute, but a 78th minute penalty from Coby Miln took the Legion up to 38-29, and denied the Seawolves a losing BP.

An entertaining, back and forth game in California sees the Legion pick up a 2nd win to improve to a 2-2 record and up to 3rd place in the standings. They will look towards next week where they face 2nd placed Old Glory DC for the Flags’ home opener at George Mason University. The Seattle Seawolves fall to 1-2 in 5th, and will face the league-leading Chicago Hounds up in Tukwila on Friday night.

2025 – RD 13: Rugby FC LA v Anthem RC

Anthem RC travel across the country to face Rugby FC LA at the Wallis Annenberg Stadium for the 2025 ‘A-Off’.

Still winless through their 2nd season of MLR competition, Anthem RC are getting perilously close to a second 0-16 season, but are fresh off of a bye week. Rugby FC LA sit 7pts out of a playoff spot in the west, and come off the first draw of the 2025 season, a 26-all affair against the Seawolves in Seattle. Anthem RC could be the first team to be eliminated from playoff contention with a loss here.

These teams have only met once in the past, with RFCLA eeking out a 29-33 victory on the road in Round 12 of the 2024 season.

2025 – RD 11: Rugby FC LA v San Diego Legion

Rugby FC LA host the San Diego Legion for their 2nd game of Round 11 of the 2025 season to contest the Cali Cup, after facing the New England Free Jacks all the way in Boston just 4 days ago.

LA came close to knocking off the reigning champs with a 23-21 defeat on the road, and should be confident heading into this game against the San Diego Legion, who are reeling on a team-worst 4 game losing streak following a 18-31 home loss to the Utah Warriors. These teams have met 3 times in the past, and Rugby FC LA is yet to defeat the Legion. Their latest attempt came in Round 4 of the 2025 season, where San Diego took a 36-28 home victory.

2025 – RD 9: Rugby FC LA v Utah Warriors

The Utah Warriors travel to the west coast to face Rugby FC LA in a Western Conference clash at Wallis Annenberg Stadium during Round 9 of the 2025 MLR season!

The Utah Warriors are fresh off of a bye week and are looking to maintain their early-season form, while RFCLA have steadied the ship after a 3-game losing streak to start the season, and have since won 4 straight including a 22-24 victory over the Houston SaberCats in Texas!

These teams have met twice in the past, and the Warriors are the only team in MLR that haven’t defeated RFCLA who hold a 2-0 series lead. The most recent meeting between these sides was a 24-31 LA victory in Utah, thanks in part to a brace from hooker Ben Strang, who starts on the bench in this one.

2025 – RD 7: Rugby FC LA v Old Glory DC

Old Glory DC travel from the nation’s capital to the west coast to face Rugby FC LA in a cross-conference clash at Wallis Annenberg Stadium within UCLA.

The hosts are flying high after back-to-back victories, but Old Glory DC are coming into this game just as confident after a convincing 28-14 victory over Eastern Conference rivals, the New England Free Jacks. These teams have only met once in the past, with neither team able to land a decisive blow. That game ended 22-22 in 2024, but this one ended very differently!

A back-and-forth game with almost a whole deck of cards handed out saw 98pts scored in total, making this match the highest scoring game of the 2025 season so far, and 3rd highest scoring ever. Eight cards were shown in total, with Rugby FC LA being shown 4 yellows and a red to Gonzalo Bertranou for two yellows. while DC were shown 3 yellows of their own that saw a significant portion of the match played 14 v 13.

2025 – RD 5: Rugby FC LA v Seattle Seawolves

The Seattle Seawolves travel down the I-5 to face Rugby FC LA in a Western Conference clash at Wallis Annenberg Stadium in Los Angeles.

The Seawolves are flying high after a last-gasp Coffee Cup victory over the New England Free Jacks, while RFCLA are still looking for their first victory of the season after falling to their California rivals in the Cali Cup. These teams have met twice in the past with Seattle holding a 2-0 series lead. The most recent meeting was a 29-12 bonus point victory for the Seawolves in Round 17 of the 2024 season. Can a new-look LA team start to even the series with a win in this one?

2025 – RD 2: Rugby FC LA v Houston SaberCats

Rugby FC LA continue their 2025-opening home stand by hosting the Houston SaberCats in a Western Conference clash at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. Both LA and Houston are coming off losses in Round 1, and will be looking to bounce back in this one.

This is the 3rd meeting between these two sides, with the Houston SaberCats taking the season sweep in 2024. The last time these sides met was in Houston during Round 15 of 2024, with the SaberCats taking a 29-12 victory. Despite all the change to Rugby FC LA over the off-season, the margin of victory would remain at 17pts and, despite having home field advantage, LA would fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Houston SaberCats made up for last weeks defeat with a 28-45 bonus point victory in Round 2 against their Western Conference rivals.

2025 – RD 1: Rugby FC LA v New England Free Jacks

The Reigning Champions kick off their 2nd title defence in a row on the road against Rugby FC LA at their new home at the Wallis Annenberg Stadium, within UCLA. With only 1 team in the Western Conference missing out on the post-season, LA will be looking to ensure they’re not the odd ones out.

A new-look, Giltinis tinted RFCLA team did their best to take it to the reigning champs, and had vastly more territory and possession than the Free Jacks, but didn’t account for New England’s defensive talent. The Free Jacks were the only team to complete over 120 tackles in Round 1 and in fact, completed almost double that, with 227. They had 5 players with more tackles than anyone else in Round 1, including the only 3 players with over 20 (see below). The reigning champs got their title defence off to a great start with 2024 Finals MVP Jed Melvin snagging an interception early on for his, and New England’s, first of 2025. 2024 Player of the Year Wayne van der Bank and Fijian flyer Paula Balekana would add scores for the Free Jacks, who claimed a try BP thanks to a penalty try. Melvin would make headlines again towards the end of the game, but for the wrong reasons. He was handed a red card in the closing minutes that might rule him out for their next game.

Rugby FC LA would strike back through their superstar half back combo, as Gonzalo Bertranou and Christian Leali’ifano would score tries, but the Free Jacks defence was too strong to mount a successful comeback. LA salvage a losing BP, and move on to next week.
