2020 – RD 5: Seattle Seawolves v Utah Warriors

The Utah Warriors travel up to Starfire Stadium to face the back-to-back Major League Rugby Champs, the Seattle Seawolves.

The Seawolves held a 28-21 lead at the 75 minute mark before Stephan Coetzee was yellow carded, reducing Seattle to 14 men. Shortly afterwards, the ref awarded Utah a penalty try to bring the score to 28-28 with minutes to play. Seawolves points machine Brock Staller slotted a penalty in the 79th minute to give Seattle a 31-28 lead and surelysecuring the game.

The Warriors however, had other ideas. In a remarkable passage of play, Utah managed to score a game-winning try in the 88th minute of play to snatch the victory away from Seattle by a score of 31-33. This would turn out to be the last MLR game of the 2020 season for both sides, as the season would be postponed for 30 days on March 12, 2020, and then cancelled on March 19, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

2020 – RD 4: Seattle Seawolves v New England Free Jacks

The Free Jacks travel up to Washington State to face the Seawolves at Starfire stadium. Kick off for this game was delayed for roughly 30minues due to lightning in the area.

Once the game did get started, the home crowd was treated to a combined 10 tries, split evenly at 5 for each team. The game ended 44-29 to Seattle, with the difference being a flawless 8/8 performance from Seawolves fly-half Ben Cima. This gave the reigning champions their first win of the season, with their 2020 record improving to 1-3.

2020 – RD 3: Seattle Seawolves v Toronto Arrows

The Toronto Arrows travel to the Pacific Northwest to take on the Seattle Seawolves at Starfire Stadium in a repeat of the 2019 MLR Semi-final that saw the Seawolves defeat the Arrows to advance to the 2019 Major League Rugby final.

While the match up was the same, the result was very different. The Arrows led early from the boot of Sam Malcolm and despite Seattle scoring the first try 25 minutes in, they only held the lead for 7 minutes before Arrows Captain Dan Moor scored to give Toronto back the lead which they held on to for the rest of the game, emerging with a comfortable 17-39 win to hand Seattle their 3rd defeat on the trot and secure Toronto’s 3rd victory.

Sam Malcolm shined for the Arrows, setting an MLR record with his 9/9 performance from the tee. The highest 100% success rate in a single MLR match. At the conclusion of the 2022 MLR season, Malcolm’s 24pts was still T-2nd for in MLR history for points scored by a single player in an MLR game.

2019 – Semifinal 2: Seattle Seawolves v Toronto Arrows

The second semifinal in the 2019 Major League Rugby competition saw the 3rd seeded Toronto Arrows travel west to face the reigning MLR champs, the 2nd seeded Seattle Seawolves. This game is the first playoff appearance for the Toronto Arrows after a strong performance in their opening season.

The Arrows fell to a 20-0 deficit before fighting their way back to a 23-17 game with just over 15 minutes to go. A 68th minute yellow card to Peter Milazzo AND penalty try awarded to Seattle took the score to 30-17, and out of reach for the league’s only Canadian team. The Seawolves book their place in the 2019 MLR final against the San Diego Legion, their 2018 Semifinal opponents.

2019 – RD 19: Seattle Seawolves v Austin Elite

A comfortable Seawolves victory in the last round of the 2019 Major League Rugby regular season meant that the Austin Elite finished their 2nd MLR season with a record of 0-16. This was the first winless season in MLR history.

2019 – RD 13: Seattle Seawolves v NOLA Gold

The Seattle Seawolves put in a huge defensive effort against the NOLA Gold, to emerge victors despite only scoring 1 try to the Gold’s 4.

Seawolves Flankers Brad Tucker and Nakai Penny put in enormous defensive performances. Tucker completed all 28 of his tackles to set a new MLR Single-Game record, surpassing 4 players with 25 including fellow Seattle flanker Eric Duechle. Nakai Penny completed all 27 of his attempts, which would have been a record in itself if not for Tucker’s 28 tackles.

Seattle Seawolves flanker Eric Duechle successfully completed 25 tackles in this game, setting a new MLR signel-game record for tackles completed by a player! He surpassed his own previous record of 24, set in Round 7 of 2018.
