Scottish prop Steven Longwell played in Major League Rugby in 2021 and again in 2024. He represented Old Glory DC for his entire MLR career.
Longwell represented a number of amateur sides in his native Scotland, including with Hillhead and Jordanhill Rugby Clubs between 2009-2013, and Ayr RFC (now in the Super 6 competition) in the Scottish Premiership between 2015-2019, winning two BT premiership championships as well as the British & Irish Cup in the 2018/19 season. between playing with Ayr, Longwell travelled to Australia and played with the Eastern Suburbs in the Shute Shield competition in 2017, before returning to the UK and training with the Glasgow Warriors (now in the URC), as well as trialing with Championship side Doncaster and Premiership side Sale.
Longwell’s debut season in MLR came in 2021 when he signed with Old Glory DC, who have strong links to the Scottish RFU. He scored 1 try in 16 appearances (15 starts) for the Flags, gaining over 200m and completing over 100 tackles. He then joined the Jersey Reds in the English Championship, playing until the club went into administration in 2023. He signed with Italian URC side Zebre but didn’t play, and joined Premiership side Bristol Bears for the 2023/24 season. In April 2024, the Flags announced the return of Steven Longwell for the 2024 season, where he earned a further 10 appearances (9 starts), scoring MLR’s first hat trick from a prop. DC qualified for the playoffs as 4th in the Eastern Conference that season, falling to rivals the New England Free Jacks in the Eastern Conference Semifinal. For his excellent scrummaging in 2024, Longwell was named to the All-MLR First XV.
