Scottish born, New Zealand raised back row Mungo Mason played in Major League Rugby between 2020-2021. He represented Old Glory DC for his entire MLR career.
Mason moved to New Zealand from Scotland at the age of two, and played rugby from a young age. He attended Tauranga Boys’ College and Captained the First XV, and received the Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship to attend the University of Waikato, where he studied Law and International Management. While attending the University of Waikato, Mason spent some time studying in Chicago and played with the Chicago Lions in 2017, before earning a contract with the San Diego Legion for MLR’s inaugural season in 2018, but did not make an appearance.
Following the 2018 MLR season, Mason returned to Scotland and played with Edinburgh Rugby for their 2018/19 PRO14 season, and represented the Scotland Sevens Team during the 2018/19 World Sevens Series. He then headed back across the pond, signing with Old Glory DC (part owned but Scottish Rugby) ahead of their inaugural MLR season in 2020. Mason started all 5 games of the COVID-shortened 2020 season, and Captained the Flags for both seasons he was there. In total he earned 17 MLR caps with DC (all starts), scoring 4 tries and gaining almost 1000m with ball in hand, while completing over 175 tackles in defence.
