A native of New Plymouth on New Zealand’s North Island, Coltman played rugby through high school for the Francis Douglas Memorial College’s First XV, playing alongside All Blacks regular Beauden Barrett. He represented the province of Taranaki at both U16 & U18 levels. Following high school, Coltman moved ot Dunedin and progressed through the Otago age-grade system, earning his provincial debut in 2010, the same year he represented the All Blacks U20 side that won the IRB Junior World Championship in Argentina. Coltman played over 80 games for Otago in the ITM Cup/Mitre 10/NPC between 2010-2022, but spent most of his playing career with the Highlanders in Super Rugby, earning over 130 caps between 2013-2022, winning the title in 2015. He started for the Highlanders and scored a try in their memorable 23-22 victory over the British & Irish Lions in 2017. Following his career with the Highlanders, Coltman moved to France to play with Lyon in the Top 14 between 2022-2024.

Coltman had been on the fringes of the All Blacks squad for a number of years, and made his debut off the bench during the 2016 End of Year tests, but had to wait until the 2019 Rugby Championship before his next caps. He was named to the New Zealand squad for the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan, and earned his first start in a pool stage game against Canada. He was a stand-out during the All Blacks bronze final match against Wales.

On 14th October 2024, the Utah Warriors announced the signing of the then-34yo Coltman for their 2025 MLR season.
