US-eligible New Zealander Devereaux Ferris played in Major League Rugby between 2020-2023. He represented the San Diego Legion (2020), the Seattle Seawolves (2021, 2023), NOLA Gold (2022), and the Houston SaberCats (2023).
Ferris grew up around Auckland, and played with Northland Rugby’s U18, U20, and Academy sides between 2011-2013, when he moved to the US. He played in the short-lived PRO Rugby competition (the spiritual predecessor to MLR) for the San Francisco Rush and also played with Life West between 2016-2019 while also trying his had at coaching the Life West Women’s side, the Gladiatrix.
Ferris stepped into MLR in the 2020 season, earning 4 caps (2 starts) for the San Diego Legion, scoring 1 try. The Legion had a 5-0 record through the first 5 rounds of the 2020 season before the COVID-19 pandemic caused the league to cancel the season. When the league returned for the 2021 season, Ferris had signed with the Seattle Seawolves and was the only Seawolves player who appeared in all 16 games of the regular season, starting 6 and scoring another try. The following year, Ferris earned another 14 MLR appearances for the NOLA Gold, serving a back-up scrum-half role and earning 3 starts. Following the 2022 season, the NOLA Gold traded Ferris to the Dallas Jackals in exchange for Cael Hodgson. Ferris did not sign with the Jackals however, and instead opted to return to New Zealand to play. In April of 2022, Ferris returned to MLR with the Houston SaberCats, earning 2 appearances before returning to the Seattle Seawolves for the remainder of the 2023 season, picking up another 4 appearances for Seattle.
In total, Ferris has earned 40 MLR caps (12 starts) across 4 teams, and has scored 3 tries in total. On 11th January 2024, Devereaux Ferris was included on the American Raptors roster for their 2024 Super Rugby Americas season.
