Canadian utility back Ciaran Hearn played in Major League Rugby between 2020-2021. He represented Old Glory DC for his entire MLR career.
A Newfoundland native from Conception Bay South just outside of St. John’s, Ciaran Hearn began playing rugby at the age of 13 with Baymen Rugby Club in Newfoundland and played throughout high school. Primarily a centre, he earned his test debut for Canada (#366) against Ireland in November 2008 while playing with the Castaway Wanderers in British Columbia, and would represent his country at the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. Following his first RWC, Hearn returned to Newfoundland and signed with the Atlantic Rock in 2012 and remained a regular in the Canadian test lineup, representing the Maple Leaf at his second Rugby World Cup in England in 2015.
Following his second RWC, Ciaran Hearn remained in England and signed with Premiership side London Irish. He represented the Exiles during their up-and-down period between 2015-19, where they were relegated from the Premiership twice but immediately won back promotion in both subsequent seasons with two Championship titles. Hearn scored 6 tries in over 30 games played for London Irish, where he played alongside fellow Canadian Jebb Sinclair. While in England, Hearn remained a constant in the Canada line-up and even represented his country at a third Rugby World Cup in Japan in 2019, earning his final test cap against South Africa at that tournament. In total, Hearn earned 73 test caps for Canada which makes him the 3rd most capped Canadian men’s player ever as of 2026. He also regularly represented Canada on the Sevens circuit and at the Commonwealth Games.
After the 2019 RWC, Ciaran Hearn headed to the USA and signed with Old Glory DC ahead of their inaugural MLR season in 2020. He started all 5 games for the Flags that year before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19, helping the team to a 4-1 record with 43 tackles made and 135m gained in possession. In August, Old Glory DC announced that the 34yo Ciaran Hearn would return for another year with the club in 2021, where he scored his lone MLR try and started 7 of his 9 appearances that season, with over 235m gained and 44 tackles made. Ending the 2021 MLR season with a win, Hearn announced his retirement from rugby in July 2021. He represented Canada over 70 times and at 3 Rugby World Cup Tournaments between 2008-2019.
Although no longer playing, Ciaran Hearn remains involved in rugby. Now based in Poland, he serves as the head coach of Ekstraliga side Juvenia Kraków.
