Australian fly-half Mack Mason played in Major League Rugby between 2021-2022, and again in 2024. He represented the Austin Gilgronis (2021-2022) and the Seattle Seawolves (2024).
Born and raised in Queensland, Australia, Mack Mason played rugby through high school, and played with the Melbourne Storm U20s in the 2015 NRL U20 competition, and started playing with Queensland Country in the NRC that same year. He’d play with Queensland Country in the NRC between 2015-2017, and would also play with Queensland U20s in 2016, and represented the Australian U20 side at the 2017 IRB Junior World U20s Championship. Also in 2017, Mason moved to the Shute Shield competition, playing with the Eastern Suburbs until 2019, earning a 2019 Ken Catchpole Finalist for the best player, and also earning 6 Super Rugby appearances for the NSW Waratahs in Super Rugby but his time with the Easts, but playing behind Bernard Foley limited Mason’s game time. He captained the Waratahs A side in 2020.
Mason signed with the re-vamped Austin Gilgronis ahead of the 2021 season, starting 15 of his 16 games that season and scoring 96pts in total. The following year he scored another 91pts in 11 appearances for the AGs (all starts), finishing 5th in league scoring as the AGs finished the regular season as top of the Western Conference, before being controversially disqualified from the post-season along with their sister team the LA Giltinis for alleged salary cap violations. Mason scored 187pts in 27 appearances (26 starts) for the AGs across his two seasons in Texas. Mason had reportedly signed with the Seattle Seawolves ahead of the 2023 MLR season, but visa issues meant he was unable to play. In September 2023, the Seattle Seawolves announced that they had signed Mason, who had not played pro rugby since the fall of Austin, for the 2024 MLR season. He was the first player in MLR to reach 100pts in the 2024 season, and was the league’s top scorer for almost the entire season, leading until the Championship game where he was outscored by Jayson Potroz as Seattle fell to the New England Free Jacks 11-20 in San Diego. Mason finished as the 2nd highest scorer in 2024, with 172pts compared to Potroz’s 181, and earned a spot on the All-MLR Second XV for 2024.
